Kansas City, Kansas
Is anyone from around Kansas City? My husband and I are going there next week, and I was going to check out there saltwater stores while he is in class. What are the brands of good sand I can get at the Lowe's or Home Depot. I will check there too. I thought the sand was called Tropical Play sand or something like that. I have to tear down my tank when we got new carpet so I have decided to replace the sand I had with the non-silica one.
Thanks for any help.

i'm from KC too.
don't expect to find any sand that you can use in a reef in KC hardware stores. they don't carry it. some fish stores to check out would be fishworld, paradise aquatics, reef house and aquarium wholesale. fishworld is where i shop and is on the east side of KC, probably farthest from the KCK side of town. paradise is on the south side of town, a little higher than others, but excellent selection. they are in the process of moving and i don't know if they are currently open. Reef House is in midtown. i haven't been there since they moved a few doors down, and heard they had some issues with the transfer of stock, but that was this summer. i heard that aquarium wholesale recently had a electrical fire, but that they were able to keep everything alive. don't know the state of their store, but i bet superwhizbang could comment on it, as he has been there recently.

Yes, I have been there and everything is repaired and intact. I think he got a new shipment of items in yesterday. I think Paradise is moving this weekend or next, so you might ask them how things are before heading over there. If you want to make the 18 mile jont, Pet World in Lawrence is not a bad place to visit either.
To be honest, the three that I would recommend the most are Fish World, Paradise and Aquariums Wholesale. They seem to have the best selection in the immediate area. They are just in different areas...central/south/east. Do a forum search here on TRT for southdown or oldcastle. You will find a write-up I did on the state of finding inexpensive sand locally in the KC area. 8(

Try searching for "southdown" or "play sand" on the boards here. There is an article that I wrote with most all of the information you will need.
Good luck.

If you are driving and will go through Wichita, there are a couple of really good stores here too... Sea Dreams, which just moved and is pretty easy to find and The Aquarium at Old Town, which is on Douglas and also easy to find... both very nice stores with very friendly and helpful workers.
