Kalk IV

Alright I have gotten some info on this before, but this time I am looking for more detail as I have finally got the IV unit and am prepared to set it up. So my questions are how do you administer the kalk in the bag I think I read Doug say it was tricky so what's the trick. Do you use the saline that is already in the bag or should you drain it and fill it with your previously mixed kalk and D/O water, and do you need to use new bags all the time and what about the Co2 mixing with it how do you avoid that. I am currently using a gallon jug with a drip- line coming out of it not the best thing i ever built.

Guess I'm the IV guy......

Since Jan's an OR, RN I had her collect the used IV equipment and I assembled a Kalk drip applicator out of it. Seems to work pretty well for my smaller applications but if someone needs larger doses, going to need to upgrade.

What I do:

One gallon jug of RO water, mix 1 tsp+ of Kent Kalk powder in the morning shake like He** and set aside for the day.

In the evening, set the jug on the counter next to sink, drop a 1/4" vinyl tube line into the jug and clip so it hangs about half way down (clothes pin, squeese clamp, etc). Connect large syringe to other end of line and pull fluid into the line and fill. Insert the filled line into the IV bag and drop bag down to floor level. (make sure the line is long enough) Syphon power will fill the bag pretty quick (really does). Also when done, it's a good time to add more Kalk to the jug (1/3 to 1/2 tsp)when done, top off with fresh RO, shake and put aside. This reduces the amount of air in the jug.

When bag is full, I pull the fill line out, insert the IV spike complete with drip chamber and thumb-wheel and connect the line to the tank. I have a shut-off valve and back-flow valve connected on the tank side and a quick connect on the bag end. The end of the drip line is inserted into the input opening in the nozzel of Maxi-Jet power head so the drip in injected into the stream of the power head. (See pictures below)

Before going to bed I set the drip for about two drips per second, open the valve and then go to bed. In the morning I shut the valve, disconnect the line, toss the empty bag in a ziplock and done...

This works for about 1000ml+ per application, also works for doing drip acclimating for new livestock. If any questions let me know...

JJ great setup for a smaller tank, being the cheapo that I am I modified a nite drain bag(hehehe) same effect though. For larger tanks or higher demand you may want to look at Bill-E's site and think about a Kalk (Nilsen) reactor if not a calcium reactor

JJ,
Nice pictures! I use the same method of inserting the drip tube into a Maxi-Jet but use a 1400 ml Kent Aquadose on my 55.
One can easily spend another couple thousand on the many hi-tech devices available to reefers but part of the advantage of our modest-sized reefs is the ability to do just fine with a bit of ingenuity and found materials. It does take a bit more tinkering but giving a few minutes a day to the tank isn't a bad thing.

Doug,
Your right about Bill-E's reactor, I'm currently at the shopping stage, stock piling parts. Need to build the RO resevour first and don't have a dowsing pump system. The IV will have to work for a little while....

Also on the project list is a sump/refugium. Thought I could get away without one but I think the tank is to susceptable to fluctuations. By the time the rock and sand base is factered in the 38g tank only has 29-30 gallons of actual water.

Anyone know of a used 55g tank available in the Twin Cites area?
