Juvenile Yellow Tang in a 50?

or is that just wishful thinking? My wife has always wanted one but I am pretty heck bent on not putting fish into stressful situations. I would like to buy her one for her birthday if you all think it would be okay. If I can find one at the lfs that is a juvenile (i.e. tiny) and promise to trade him in when he gets too big, can I put one in a 50?

I don't see a problem with it as long as you move him out when he starts growing larger.

The problem with that idea is your wife will grow fond of the fish and even name him, then what are you going to do.

Switch him out when she's not looking But seriously. I will make sure she understands that if she wants a yellow tang she will have to be willing to always accept a small one. Either that or I will just have to take the plunge when he gets bigger and buy a 125. I like that idea even better.

If she gets attached to the fish, that may work rather well.

This is funny. I'm in the same position. Have 3 juvie tangs, 2 in a 55. My plan was all 3 in teh 75 but I have this 6-line who's been a royal (&%#& about new fish. They all have names.

While on a leisurely LFS journey the other day, I saw this nice 125, the long version, double overflows..................

Okay so after work I am off to the LFS to buy the smallest tang they have. I'm going to have to rearrange the rock to keep my Royal Dottyback in check until the tang gets situated.

Sounds like the perfect excuse to get approval for an upgrade to me. “Honey if we don't get him a bigger tank he'll die a horrible death”

Based on what I've seen of the one yellow tang I have in the 450g, I really think it would be content in a 55 if it was the only tang. The one I have isn't an avid swimmer, like the achilles, hippo, and the other tangs. The yellow seems quite content with one side of the tank and rarely ventures over to the other side, unless I feed on that side.

Granted, this is only one yellow tang and I'm a firm believer that each fish has it's own personality.

Be careful when you go shopping for "the smallest one" because sometimes that equates to the sickest one. Look for a fat little guy who is eating well.
