Just Starting out

Hey all, I am just starting to get into the hobbey. I have been reading as much as I can from this site and books. I am purchasing a 24g Nano and just want to take my time and do it right. For starters I am wanting to have few fish and some corals (nothing extreme). Is there any steps that may help me in setting up my tank.
EXAMPLE:
Getting the tank up and running.
How long to have tank running befor putting in fish or corals.
Getting water to the proper specs.

Please help, I am very excited and wanting to learn as much as I can
Thanks
Rees21

Hi Rees21, welcome to TRT!!! You've found a great place to get some great advice from great people.

Your 3 questions require a very long answer, but I only have time for a short one, so here it is:

1. getting the tank up and running: You'll need live rock and some saltwater. I assume that your nano comes with lights and some methid to move the water.

2. How long before adding livestock: You need to wait until the nitrogen cycle finishes its first cycle. In short, you can start adding stuff when you can no longer detect ammonia and nitrites in the water. You will need test kits to determine that.

3. Getting water to proper specs: you need to start with saltwater that has the correct salinity/specific gravity. You'll need a refractometer or hydrometer to measure the SG. Then you need a heater to get the water to the correct temp. Most of the other parameters will be fine. If you do water changes regularly (10% every 2 weeks), you shouldnb't have to do anything else. If you have lots of animals in there, you may need, in the future, to add calcium and carbonate to get good growth.

I'm sure others will chime in with more details.

HTH!

Rees21, let me just tell you first off, welcome. Second of all, yes you need test kits. Third, ONLY BUY SALIFERT TEST KITS. Don't let anyone waste your time or money buying anything else. If you don't you'll just end up buying them later after wasting money on other kits. The basic kits you will need are:

PH
Calcium
Magnesium
Alkalinity
Phosphates
Nitrate
Nitrite

Welcome to TRT!
24g is a great tank to start with I really enjoy mine. The most important thing to have while setting up your tank is patience!

Yes love my aquapod. If you got the money get an ro/di unit if not sometimes walmart has a machine that sells the ro water. Basically you want pure water not tap because of the chemicals added to it. Usually the lfs will sell it as well but more expensive. Main thing is having good water to mix your salt with.

Welcome to TRT!!

you need to wait at least 2 months before adding any "critters" to the tank. this is not only for the health of the critters, but for you sanity.
