Just how much clearance is needed for MH and has anyone done this?yep another light ?

Now I have my eyes on an AGA 90 gallon "Modern" series Oak tank and stand. My question is regarding lights. Every tank I saw that resembled this one had VHO lighting attached to the hood. It only looks like there is about 4-6inches of clearance between the hood and the water. It it possible to put Metal Halide lights in there (I thought I read at least 8" clearance was needed)? Also im a little curious how metal halide would affect temp in that closure even with 2 fans in the canopy. Anyone do that or should I just go with VHO lighting.

If its possible Ill probably get the 90 gal

Canopys for Metal Halide lighting are usually 12" which gives you about 8" between the bulbs and the water. It seems most of the canopys supplied by manufacturer are lower and more suitable for VHO or other low clearence lights. Have you looked real close at the mfgr supplied stands, a lot of them are a joke, made of cheaper materieals and glossy finish, may or maynot be suitable for your needs(pressboard in a SW environment is a nono) You might consider building it or having it built yourself, prolly wont save much but you should wind up with a better product.
Lastly the 90 is 26" hi, I think MH would be a good choice
