Just found this DIY siphon overflow, looks like a great idea!!!

Check this out. There is a llttle bit of reading involved.
It's a great looking DIY overflow box (not actually a box but does the same job). Great for those (like me) that can't drill an existing tank but want to add a sump and you don't have to worry about flooding the floor because of the siphon breaking on a dodgy overflow box!!

I'm going to give it a go, one of these days!!

Looks like it will work. But the level they show for min water is to low I think, flood time , I am sure that You can adjust it. I went back to check it again and I think it is adjusted with the skimmer .

why do you think that it will not break siphon? it is just as likely to break siphon as a normal overflow box. unless i am missing something.

I actually made something like that, but I decided it was not enough flow for me.

Great alternative to drilling tho.

Geoff,
I couldn't see how it would not break siphon until about post #40. You really need to read the at least the first 9 pages of the thread in detail to understand properly how it works. The initial posts are very vague in the information they give and alot of the discription of the parts and how they work are not until later in the thread. Most people wouldn't realise there is a tube in the middle of the larger tube until about post #20, I certainly didn't.

Christy was just talking about ditching the powerheads and adding a sump and spray bar and this looks perfect for our 55g. Now how do I match a return pump to this in the sump to make everything live in harmony?

Check out Popular Modifications --> Stockman hangon overflow.

I use Stockman standpipes in my overflow box (the durso' were too large). They are SILENT & lots of flow.

Perry from what i could understand people were getting some pretty good flowrates. Ithink if you built one with 1" inner pipe and 2" outer you could easily push 600gph. It should run about the same flow rate as a standard 1" standpipe. Some were claiming 3000 litres/ph (800gph) through 16mm pipe, although i don't think i would try this.

Maybe trial and error, get a larger pump and put a T in the return line to throttle the flow back if need be.
