Question

Just A Thought

What Would Be Better? Mixing Your Own SW Or Going To The Seattle Aquarium And Paying 5 Cents A Gallon For UVA Disinfected, Filtered Sea Water. What Are The Pros And Cons Of Something Like That? Seems Like A Good Idea For Practicality And Economically. But What Do I Know?... I Am A n00b

hmmmm good question,

some poeple do use natural saltwater ( NSW) but i am stuck at making my own using IO salt . you might want to talk to the aquarium and see if they can tell you the parameters of the water.

Hauling 5 gallon buckets of water on a regular basis would certainly build up your upper arm strength!!

You would certainly have to adjust the SG of the aquarium water to your tank's.

I would always prefer the convenience of mixing my own with RO/DI water in the privacy of my own living room. The initial cost of a RO/DI unit will pay for itself many times over, especially when you factor in the cost of gas to and fro the aquarium.

Just my thoughts.

5 cents per gallon is very cheap. If you didn't have to haul it around, I'd say that's a great idea. However, depending on how big your tank is, that could potentially be a LOT of water that you'll have to carry around. Also, as Daddy said, you'll need to have some salt and R/O water to adjust the SG to match your tank's. Additionally, you'll also still need R/O for top offs. So bottom line, as usual, is that getting an R/O unit is the way to go, IMO.

Funny that they can sell a natural resource for only 5 cent a gallon. I think that it is cool but why are they selling it so cheap? If I was able to buy it for .05 a Gal. I think I have to buy it.

It's Pretty Cool How They Do It.... You Pay A $25 "Fee" And They Give You Something Kinda Like A Prepaid Debit Card That Is Used For Getting Access To The Nozzle... That You Can Drive Up To, So You Only Have To Walk Like 5 Feet With Your Bazillion Gallon Bucket. So With 25 Bucks You Can Get Like 500 Gallons

It'd certainly be cheaper than buying Salt. And I've got a truck and several 55 gallon polydrums!

dang!

If it's NSW, you shouldn't need to adjust the salinity unless Peugot Sound is not full strength SW... ...run your tank at whatever the salinity is for the nsw unless it isn't full strength (like below 33 ppt)

We all use NSW down here (of course we are surrounded by it!).
I would always recommend using NSW when its available to you.

I agree James, NSW all the way here in ozzieland!!
I used to spend $60 a month on ASW because the LFS guy scared me into believing that i would cause a tank crash if i used NSW that is 500 yards from my front door (I live 2 bocks from the beach), until i started to do some research and found that most people here use NSW. Trust me i nearly punched the LFS guy and i have not been back to the shop since.

If collected properly NSW is as good as ASW, maybe even better.

I'd use it for sure!!
