My el cheapo canon can actually have the WB customizable (as well as settings for auto WB/tungsten/fluoro lighting etc) which I have been playing with. What I can't bring out though is the fantastic fluorescent greens of my montipora/favia under actinics only - even though they're so amazing to the naked eye...

Mind? Of course not....im flattered
Im a noob to the whole photography thing...but i will share what i have found.
First of all, all of the auto WB settings are worthless if you want true to life color. There is no way they can account for the differences in our tanks lighting. As far as those auto settings go, i have had the closest to true life colors come from the cloudy and or overcast settings. But they come out a little warm.
The custom WB setting needs to take place using either a white card or a grey card depending on your camera. Mine uses a grey card. Its like 13 or 17% grey and the rest white. You put this card into your tank and under your lights and follow the directions in your manual on how to get your camera to accept this as a custom pre-set white balance. Thats it. Then you dont need to mess with editing your pictures colorwise.......they are perfect.
It wasnt all that easy to get my camera to accept the white card...it took me a while as i found you really need the card to be facing the camera more or less straight on, and at the same time be in full exposure to your lights to hit it. This is NOT a one person task....lol
I also found that i could easily get it to accept my sandbed as the white balance, and ironically enough, that actually got it pretty darn close. But wasnt as good as when i got it to accept the white balance taken with the grey card.
hope that helps
