Dude, Honestly. I'm really getting sick and tired of looking at great pictures of your sweet tank. Alright? Just when I start thinking my tank is looking good. The best I can do with my stupid camera is take blurry pictures of everything.

Have I already asked you what type of camera you're using?

Thanks guys

Tashier.......i picked up a Nikon D-100 used about 5 months ago with a couple lenses for quite a bit less than it was worth. Came with a couple fo lenses.......one of which this nikkor I sold on ebay via buy it now for enough to buy a new Tamron Macro lense on Fishdaddys recommendation. I kind of kick myself now realizing i gave that nikkor lense away....but i got what i wanted so all is well.

Im still figuring out how to use it to be honest. I just take lots of pics and end up getting some keepers. The custom white balance using a grey card was the coolest thing I ever figured out so far....LOL Childs play for some, but taking true to life color pics without having to mess with them besides cropping makes it really fun.

My sis in law has a nice Canon EOS 20D SLR camera. I've tried using it and still come up with blurry pics. I know little to NOTHING about cameras. I'm guessing she doesn't have the right lense. She has the regular generic one (Beats me) and then a telephoto lense. I know enough to not use the telephoto. What lense should I use for these pics on it?

here is the lens i bought on Fishdaddys recommendation.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...ughType=search

Of course when i bought it there was only a $25 dollar rebate. lol....not the $90 one ofered now

Ill tell you this though, the professional photographer who sold me the d100, came over to my house to sell it to me, and was taking SWEET macro shots of my tank from 20 feet away in the hallway with his telephoto lens.

so a lot of it simply comes down to learning how in the heck to use your camera

Fly guy those are absolutely stupendous!!!

Hope you don't mind but I've copied some of them for my screensaver (PC version of the wonderful Mac slide around/slow zoom slideshow). And what was your trick for the white balance? My el cheapo canon can actually have the WB customizable (as well as settings for auto WB/tungsten/fluoro lighting etc) which I have been playing with. What I can't bring out though is the fantastic fluorescent greens of my montipora/favia under actinics only - even though they're so amazing to the naked eye...

Mind? Of course not....im flattered

Im a noob to the whole photography thing...but i will share what i have found.

First of all, all of the auto WB settings are worthless if you want true to life color. There is no way they can account for the differences in our tanks lighting. As far as those auto settings go, i have had the closest to true life colors come from the cloudy and or overcast settings. But they come out a little warm.

The custom WB setting needs to take place using either a white card or a grey card depending on your camera. Mine uses a grey card. Its like 13 or 17% grey and the rest white. You put this card into your tank and under your lights and follow the directions in your manual on how to get your camera to accept this as a custom pre-set white balance. Thats it. Then you dont need to mess with editing your pictures colorwise.......they are perfect.

It wasnt all that easy to get my camera to accept the white card...it took me a while as i found you really need the card to be facing the camera more or less straight on, and at the same time be in full exposure to your lights to hit it. This is NOT a one person task....lol

I also found that i could easily get it to accept my sandbed as the white balance, and ironically enough, that actually got it pretty darn close. But wasnt as good as when i got it to accept the white balance taken with the grey card.

hope that helps

Thanks fly - will try both of those and see which one comes out better. Now to work on the fluorescence under actinics....
