just a bit of info ...
Some of you may have seen my thread on cyanobacteria a few days back. Well I have been fighting it for a while and it was beginning to be everywhere, red slime in my sump, and on rock, tons of stringy brown things on my sand bed and rock in my main display tank.
Well I dosed my sump with 1 teaspoon of sugar 2 nights ago and the stuff today is about 80% gone. Just thought I would share this in case any of you have this problem.

Is the sugar the only thing you have done? Have you been doing water changes and extra cleaning? Just wondering if it's a coincidence or if it's responsible for clearing up the cyano. I'm not sure how it would do it, but I'm glad you got rid of the cyano

Nope, no water changes at all, and no syphoning since last week. It had well come back since. A local reefer told me he dumped a sugar pack in his tank once and it cleared it up for him, so he told me to try it, and bam! It works.

did you shut the skimmer off?
Any Chemists out there have an explanation for this?

Hmm...maybe the sugar promoted the bloom of bacteria that binded the excess phosphates and that starved out the cyano? The bacteria would have been removed by the skimmer. I believe that's the theory behind dosing sugar and vodka. Anyone else with a theory?

I have always had a problem with nitrates I dosed a 1/2 a teaspoon, a week a go and no nitrates, I guess it could be coincedental but I think it helps.

I was cleaning my sandbed about once a week, but when I did the stuff was covering it the next day, so it didnt help much. I am not running any carbon and the sugar was just regular every day sugar. Actually the person that recommended it to me used those little sugar packs in his.
