JennM Seahorse ID please

Please help me with the ID on this seahorse. When I got it, it was bright yellow and has turned black. Eating very well and seems happy. About 5 inches tall and very active. It was sold to me as a female kudu. Before I attempt to purchase a mate I want to make sure this is correct. I have a beautiful 90 set up for just ponies.

Hard to tell from the pic, but I'd guess H. erectus. H. kuda females tend to be yellow and males tend to be tan/grey even. Erectus can change colours at will more than other species that I've observed (anecdotal.. not scientific!).

Thick head, big chest, flat crown all tell me this is erectus. Kuda is a smaller, daintier horse typically.

It would help if you could find out where it was collected.

How long have you had it? Is it eating, and if so, what is it eating? Looks fat and sassy enough - looks female from the pic but it's not close enough to see if there's a pouch there but judging by the shape of the belly I'd say it's a girl.

I got a boy of the same species in my shop yesterday First time I've seen a male available for a while. I get mostly tank raised but I do get the occasional wild caught and I train them to frozen before I sell them. Erectus are usually easy to train to frozen foods and their babies are benthic - they hitch from birth, and are easier to rear than pelagic species like H. reidi.

My only concern would be the colour change - sometimes turning a dark colour means they aren't content with their surroundings. Is this possible? Sometimes they just change to 'blend in' but I've bought black horses that have coloured up and turned yellow after being in my system. Typically lighter colours are happy colours but again depends on the species.

HTH

Thanks for the reply. I almost headed up to Canton yesterday to your store but Aquarium Showcase was as far north aas I made it. I picked her and the male up 3 weeks ago at Fintastic in Charlotte. The male was very lethargic and didn't make it 3 days. She's fat and sassy and follows the turkey baster around. I'm feeding her frozen brine and mysis soaked in Zoe. I hope this is ok? I would love to pair her up with a male if yours is available.

As far as her belly, I would say she looks like a guy with a huge beer gut and his belt pulled way too tight. Kinda like what I see in the mirror. LOL
