Question

JEBO 48" 220W(55wx4) Power Compact Lighting

JEBO 48" 220W(55wx4) Power Compact Lighting, are these unites any good? the cheap price scares me, but then again sometimes more $$ does not mean better!

Welcome to TRT!!!

i think several people have them, and are happy with them. they are inexpensive, but so is the technology in them. with PC lights it is the bulb replacement costs that will get ya. check to see how much they are to replace before making a decision.

If you get lucky the CustomSeaLife sets are still kicking around here and there on fire sale.

We put bargain PC setups on all our tanks and love them. We have softies only as well as Rose BTA's that do well.

I bought a 24" Jebo 110w (2 x 55) from Aquatraders.com a few weeks ago.

It arrived fast, complete, and worked "out of the box".

I was afraid of what it would actually be because of the price, but I am impressed. (it's amazing what $40.00 buys these days.)

Some people scoff at the Jebo name because they are used to paying way too much for the same thing.

(the fact that it works is all I need)

Aquatraders used to sell replacement bulbs for somewhere around $15 each. I didn't find them on the site, so they may not anymore. I'm finding them elsewhere for around $30 a bulb.

I too have been looking at getting a couple of these... for the price even if they only run a year or so... it beats metal halide costs... i really want to get halides someday but right now just can't afford it.

I have been looking at the Coralife retro setup similar to this for about twice the price. Does anyone know about the quality of the ballast and the bulbs in this light? I have found so far that you get what you pay for and that would lead be to believe I would be replacing this soon enough and throwing that money down the toilet.

That is an excellent point electro4! I am a firm believer in that as well.

However, I have priced fixtures @ the local home improvement stores ( I was considering gutting one and making my own retro on an existing hood) and they are by no means expensive.

The technology IS that cheap.

Sure there are differences in all of the manufacturer's components, but even "top shelf" ballasts and parts are not nearly what some of the big names charge for their respective units. (Paying for the name?)

It CAN be expensive, but it doesn't have to be. (If it lasts a year, I consider it getting my money's worth....$3.33 a month.)

I'll post if I have any problems with the Jebo.
It did come with a 6 month warranty (with the option to buy more when ordering), but I like to live on the edge. :-)

I am skeptical about the Jebo brand but my associate in the store i work in has been importing some of their stuff and it looks ok, they have a six gallon with filtration that looks like it would make a great Nano. Let us know how well it's working in a few months.

I bought 2 65 units for my 20 gallon nano and they have worked flawlessly for 7 months now. For under 70 shipped for 130w of light is hard to beat!

I plan a MH soon for this tank however, as these were intended to be disposable!

Hey! This is an old thread.

I had that exact unit over my 50 for a year or so,.. a big upgrade is adding a fan, makes the bulbs brighter and last sooooo much longer.

I later took the unit apart and pulled the guts out to make it into a retro over my 180,.. after about 2.5 years of constant use I lost one of the ballasts,.. don't know why, but the second ballast is still going strong over my 15G

FWIW:

I also originally had two 4x 65w coralife PC units over my 110 when I started the tank. They really only lasted about 2.5 years as well as the wiring inside on the bulb connectors became very brittle and was cracking.

So I guess if you can get 2 years out of cheapo Jebo why not!
