is this skimmer overkill?

ok, so I am setting up a 29 gallon mixed reef, sps dominant. probably about 20 gallon sump. I picked up a coralife needlewheel super skimmer 220 from a friend of mine. Is that overkill for my system? any possible problems this will cause? comments?

thanks

Itll work great. If you end up feeling you are skimming too much, simply turn it down or turn it off for a while each day.

Probably is overkill but it won't hurt anything to run a big skimmer. besides, you'll probably upgrade toa bigger tank in a year

I won't be upgrading for some time. I used to have a big tanks, and one broke on me, and it don't have the time or money to deal with replacing that again. I just want a small tank for a while. maybe a few years from now and I will upgrade. but until then, am I hurting anything with this big of a skimmer

In the future you will wonder how you ever thought this skimmer was to big .

It is easy to make a big skimmer "smaller", but real difficult to make a small skimmer bigger.

Sure, or you can just turn it off like I do (like Fly said above).

ya, on my smaller tank i have askimmer that I dont skim to potential with as i feel it is too much. I also have this delusion that some of my homemade food concoction actually feeds some of my stonies, so i like to turn off the skimmer for a couple of hours after i feed.

You'll be fine, it's considerably better than the alternative (too little or no skimming).

if there is sand in the tank, than no, the skimmer is not overkill. i do not think that that skimmer is overkill even if it is a BB tank.
