Is there such a thing as old Sand?

Does a DSB get old?

I have had my tank up for 7 years with its orginal DSB, which is probably 3-4 inches deep. It seems to have lost some color and there is algae growing b/w the glass and sand. Do I need to change it out?

I am considering just replacing it with about an inch or two of new sand. I thought about saving some of the old sand as seed. Does anybody see a problem with that?
