Is it dead?

I put a turbo snail into my ten gallon only to have it attacked by a large hermit crab. I immediatley moved him to my other tank, but it still hasn't come out of the shell, it has been completely closed for like a day and a half now. Will it eventually come out or is it dead? I don't want it decaying in my tank.

I agree... leave it alone for awhile. Let us know what happens by the end of the week. I bet it's just hiding after the battle.

Heh!

Do the sniff test, if he doesn't pass, it's time for burial in the ceramic coffin. As pointed out above, they may stay retracted for many days and still be fine, just do the sniff test every day until it either crawls away from it's location in the tank or it doesnt pass the sniff test.

I think you will know how to tell if it doesn't pass...

Well, at least it is out of your water column so there will not be a nitrogen (ammonia) spike...

The sniff test has just made it way up at the top of my list of things I hope never has to happen with my tanks.

dont trash it, the hermit earned the shell by being the supperior, toss it back and let the hermit eat and take the shell!

I agree .. the reason that the crab attacked it was for the shell ... if you want to prevent that in the future place empty shells in your tank that are larger than the one your crab is in .. you can get them from most LFS or online ...
