Use clean shells, not one with a snail in it to reduce the nitrogen load. Although it will prolly be no worse than a small chunk of shrimp, snails seem to take a while to decompose, might wanna clean out the shell first, then toss it back in...

hermits will go after shells even if they have replacements available its in there nature. I keep my hermit in my twelve gallon with a few other crabs and a conch. He likes to attack my fish which is why I took him out of my main tank. Now I just keep smaller cleaner crabs in the tank with my corals and fish they dont seem to hurt anyone except each other they constantly fight over food and shells but so far they dont kill one another or any of my other stuff.
