Is it coralline algae? Does it flake off the glass when you scrape it?

Every tank will develop a light green film alga on the glass ... comes with owning a tank. Many will handle this with a combination of algae eating snails and periodic manual cleaning.

It is awful stuff! it is responsible for most of the problems in the world today including:

War
Disease
foot odor
unrest in the middle east
my sensitive skin
your co-workers bad attitude
and my moms back pain...

actually, it just happens. wipe it off when it shows up. if it gets bad then it is showing you of a bigger problem in the tank.

I personally like this algae, for the following reason:

You can use the rate of growth of this algae to gage whether you're over feeding or not. (in MY understanding) average tank needs the glass cleaned about every 3-4 days. If you need to clean it more often, it's a sign that you're overfeeding the tank. Less? You're doing an above average job of handling of nutrients (import vs export). every 2 weeks, and your fish are probably starved to death!
