Introducing the Rookie

Just wanted to say "Hi" to this board. Found the website about four hours ago and have been scrolling thru posts trying to glean info. Decided to jump on board and register. You people will probably tire of me soon as I have an endless number of questions. I was given a 240 gal tank in bad condition. Moved it, cleaned it and restarted it within the last week. Now in process of killing aptasia. I had alot of professional (well paid) help throughout. Now I would like to double and triple check the info that I have been given and I thought this board would be a great place for that. You all ready for question number one? Hee hee. What temperature should I keep a reef aquarium. One reference book said 75 degrees is optimum but an aquarium store owner suggested closer to 80. Any comments? Thanks, Steve.

Welcome steve
Have fun witt he 240, thats an ambitious project to learn on. As far as temp 80 is OK for most stuff, 80-82 seems fine with lots of circulation and aireation. May change depending on particular animals, caribean stuff might like a little cooler and red sea can take more temp.

Welcome!

I keep my larger tank at 82, my nano at 78-80 because it has less gas exchange (open surface area)

Ask away; we can take it!

Thumbs up

Hi Steve!

Welcome to TheReefTank! You will find that temperature is very debatable, and everybody finds different temps work for them. I have found that the best temp for my tanks is around 81-84F Good luck with the new 240!

Hi Steve,

A 240, what a great gift!
I keep my tanks at 80-82f; as Doug said, a bit higher or lower depends on what corals you keep.

For your Aiptasia, please see this site: http://www.wyx.com/iheo/tank/aiptasia.htm
I would recommend a more up-to-date book(s). The Conscientious Marine Aquarist, by Robert Fenner and/or Natural Reef Aquariums, by John Tullock are good ones (about $25 apiece online). I would suggest reading one/both of these before getting any further along with the project. The Reef Aquarium, Vols I & II, by Sprung & Delbeek, is an excellent comprehensive reference. Another encyclopedic choice would be Modern Coral Reef Aquariums, Vols I & II, by Fossa & Nielsen. For Corals, A Practical Guide to Corals, by Puterbaugh & Borneman, or the more detailed Aquarium Corals, by Eric Borneman, are good to have. Having a current reference library is an essential part of this hobby.

Please tell us more about the tank: parameters; test kits; skimmer; pumps; sump; substrate; rock; etc.

Also, where are you located? There are bound to be some TRT members familiar with good local resources.
Glad to have you aboard!
Dick
