Intresting debate
I was reading a thread the other night on that other big forum and i came across a thread about 40 pages long of people saying they use sugar or vodka to reduce there nitrates.
I am not trying to open a can of worms here, i am not saying i am going to try or have tried it. I would like to see some comments about how it would work and possibly the long term effects on the tank

FWIR it's ment to be a source of fuel for bacteria,.. assuming that perticuar type of fuel is limiting in bacterial growth, then the bacteria take up nitrate and more importantally phosphate (along with a host of other things) to breed.
This breading of bacteria is ment to happen in the water colum so the skimmer can remove the bacteria to export the nutreants.
A couple of the problems can be driving water nutreants too low bleaching your SPS (this happened to me), other issues include over breading of bacteria ( bacterial bloom) that takes the 02 out of the water coulm sufficating your fish.
That's the basics,.. it is very dangerious and I'm not going to play with it again.

I think the Vodka was for drinking and then you would pass out letting your tank take a course without you involved and it will lower your nitrates.
Well i dunno really......

I have no idea whether it works or not. But it seems to me that the Vodka should go from glass to lips while reaching for the skimmer gate valve and set it a bit wetter. refill glass and sit, enjoy, and drink a bit more lol.

like i said i have not tried nor do i intend to try it. If i remember right they were talking about in the thread that people in Germany have been doing it for many years with out any tank crashes or any loses. I just thought it was really intresting to read. And thought i would see what everyones opinion about it would be

Maybe the Germany Vodka is different or a special brand to it?

I agree with this answer!
If I added it to the tank I would be afraid the fish would start getting drunk and running into things. Just what I need, my fish getting drunk, tattooed, shaving their scales and going in and out of rehab. Never mind that was another story.
