If I were to buy a new return pump right now I would probably go with an Eheim,... I've heard nothing but good about them, and apperently they don't transfer heat as much as most and are very quiet. You can also use them exterinal or internal.

I learned the hard way that Mags aren't intended for external use (according to Marinedepot).
I like external, leaves extra room in the sump.

I currently have a Mag 9.5 in the sump for return and a Mag 5 in the sump for the chiller. Submersed pumps DO add heat but if they ever start leaking? So What??

I don't think it makes a huge difference either way. I have a mag 7 that I run internally and it is pretty loud. i have heard that the other mags don't make that much noise. I have also heard good things about the Eheim pumps. IMO, the Mag and Eheim pumps are the best value in pumps and you won't go wrong with either one. Internal pumps probably have less noise and are easier to install, but they do add heat to the tank. External pumps add less heat, but can can be noisier and are harder to install with more risk of water leaking.

under 800gph, internal (submersable) and yes i would do Eheim. over 800 GPH go with a true external like a Gen-x pcx 40, 55, 70, etc... they will create less heat.

Thanks for the input guys. I will probably go submersible. I only have a 75g and i'm leaning towards a 30g sump.I dont see me using anything bigger more than 800gph

Eheim, though expensive, are great pumps. The one on my calcium reactor is absolutely silent. Nearly impossible to hear.

I have Eheim 1250, around 300 gph - it doesn't have rubber feet and transfers vibration onto the glass without them. Don't know about the bigger models, but it's a big drawback - I'm keeping it on a sponge, that should be cleaned frequently.
Have Sedra 5000 in the same tank(sump) - different matter: suction cups legs, handle for convenient moving. Like it. Can't say anything about heat, longevity, head pressure or a noise - have it a few months only, it feeds a skimmer, didn't noticed any drawbacks, and the skimmer noise covers any other noise if it is present.
