Insurance

Does anyone know if you need to have a specific rider in the Homeowners policy to cover our tanks, the livestock or the damage that could occur in a catastrophic failure??? Two hundred gallons could do alot of damage

I lost my livestock during a move and that was not covered as a household possession under homeowners/renters. My State Farm agent said if I flooded the house though damage would probably be covered. This varies from state to state even with the same company and drastically between insurance carriers.

We just always assume the worst will happen and try and mitigate our own risk up front by trying to limit floods and electrical problems.

Chances are to typical rent/homeowner policy wont cover squat, except as Parry noted. You may want to discuss specifics with your agent if you have a large investment, but be warned that unless your agent is in the hobby, they will prolly freak out when the see what you are trying to insure

I called our insurance company to inquire about the same. They would cover damage (say if the tank cracked) but they will not cover livestock.

Insurance adjuster here. Most policies are very similar accross states as to the main coverages. There are some differences though so you would want to read your policy to determine what is or is not covered. Also there are multiple policies and you can purchase a basic policy or a more comprehensive one within the same state. Animals including fish are generally excluded from homeowners policies, (farm policies do cover livestock as an exception).

If your tank breaks the damage to the structure might be covered depending on the policy you bought. Some are named peril and some are covered for all risks unless excluded. Contents would be excluded from coverage as they are covered on a named peril basis, and "cracked fish tank" is not a named peril. The tank would also not be covered unless a "named peril" damaged the tank. A crack due to no reason other then tank failure is not a named peril.

Sorry I don't have happier info on the subject. As far as insurance goes, we assume all the risk for damage to our aquarium livestock.

I'm not aware of any type of endorsement or policy that would cover the animals in the tank. Lloyd's may have some type of coverage available, but again I'm not aware of anything.

I just had a fire in my tank room caused by a faulty lighting unit, my insurance is covering everything except for livestock. They are however covering liverock and sand, oh yeah but they aren't covering the cost of the faulty ballast....
