Question

Installing Overflows

Hi everyone,

Sitting around waiting for my lights to start working really made me reconsider my new tank. When I started I didn't think I would need a sump, but now I don't think I should have the tank without one. The tank is 55 gal so I think I will need 2 overflows. I already have the tank, its made by AGA. What is a good price to have this tank drilled, fitted with overflows, and everything that goes with that. Also what is a decent size sump for a 55? I was thinking along the lines of 20-30 gal.

Thanks a lot,
Drew

I am not sure how much it would cost to get drilled, where abouts is New Berlin? I would suggest that you get a sump as large as you can that will fit in your stand.I also think that you can get by with just one overflow.

Figure $20 and up on the holes if you can find a place to do it plus the cost of the bulkhead fitting and assorted plumbing pieces
What kind of flow rate are you looking to have in there?
FWIW I used a 20 long as my sump on the 55g
Considering the hassle of drilling and building the overflow walls you might be better off with a hangon and if you upgrade to a biger tank go reef ready next time

Drew,

I have a 50 w/ a 20gal sump, and that seems to work OK. It got a little crowded in the sump when I added a pump for a chiller and a pump for a refugium, but it all fits. I do have to watch water level carefully; there is a pretty fine line between too low for all the pumps and too high so that if power shuts off the sump can handle botht the main tank and refugium water drop (a very real consideration in southern CA, the land of deregulated, rolling blackout power.)

If I was to do it again, I'd go bigger, but this is working and it's a major pain to change - my cabinet's built over the sump.

Also, on the subject of overflow boxes: IMO, you don't have to have one in the sense of a normal box in a corner or back of your tank. And, if you find the drain to your sump creates a lot of noise and add something like a Durso mod, you will lose any holding volume advantage to the box. Several of us reefers have built combinations of water silencers and overflows that can eliminate the need for building a special overflow box. I believe Doug has archived many discussion threads that talk about this, if you want more info you can search this site. FWIW.
