Info on Seahorses

Hi all,

Well I have searched through the threads for information on seahorses and found a lot. But I am still a bit confused though and thought maybe someone could point me in the right direction. I tried to check out the web site seahorse.org but its not available. So here goes lol.

I have a freshwater tank, I think its a 40 gallon but not sure, its taller then wide I know that. Its the size of one 75 gallon UG filter plate if that helps any. I was looking into making that a seahorse only tank. As of right now it has a UG filter and a penguin 330 bio-wheel filter on it. I would think I need something else other then that though. Am just wondering what else I needed for the tank or if I should just scrap those filters and start different.

Was just looking for any ones ideas to help.

Thanks again

Kita

Hi Kita!! I don't know a whole lot about seahorses so can not give you the needed advice but you may want to check this home page out:

You might want to talk to JennM on this board. She seems pretty knowledgable/obssesed with Sea Horses.

Jenn, you don't mind if I volunteer you do you?

I am a member of another great board at http://w3page.com/fishline/cgi-bin/i.../ikonboard.cgi . It is very similar to this board in that there are no flames and everyone is willing to help others out. The main difference is that lots of the members are from the Midwest instead of the Northwest.

One of our members (KC Hippocampus) is a moderator at seahorse.org. She has had good success at keeping seahorses and is very knowledgeable. I had the pleasure of meeting her in person this weekend and she is a great lady. Feel free to join the board and ask her any questions you may have. She is more than willing to help out.

HTH,
Andrew

Wrasse Man, it's gone WAY beyond obsession!

A tall tank is best for horses! Particularly if you want them to breed, the taller the better.

I'd scrap the undergravel, you could probably use the Penguin, and I'd add a skimmer. Do you plan to use live rock? I do.

You can see my seahorse tank here: http://www.noondaynight.com/Seahorse.../JennMtank.jpg

Don't let that sump/refugium thing scare you, it doesn't have to be as elaborate as that, my first horse tank was an Eclipse tank with the same bio-wheel that your penguin has. Actually I kept my first horse about 16 years ago with a UGF but that's another story

Seahorse.org is a great resource, and there are a couple of Yahoo groups: go to http://groups.yahoo.com and search for Seahorse-talk and Ultimate_Seahorse Both are good discussion groups.

Take your time, do lots of research on the species you'd like to have (I did but was sent the wrong speci! LOL) and if you're lucky, soon you'll be watching stuff like this:
