importance of LR?

After reading a lot about it I decided to remove the sandbed and try bare bottom for a while...

Last week I took all the LR out and this week I took all the sand out. I'm waiting on the cutting board as I cook my rock for the next month (amazing what kind of crap comes out).

I was at the point where the only thing I tested for was SG because I knew what to dose to keep everything stable. Well today I tested the water and again it seems to be spot on... this is without the LR and sand. So my question is how can the water test so well without the rock? - which I thought was so important to filtration

I will keep doing water changes and hope the quality stays good for the next month while the rocks cook.

ammonia, trites, trates... then ca and alk (which were and always have been low at 340ca and 8dkh)

I guess I expected to see higher nitrates without all that LR. But they were not detectable
