If you could do an in wall...
What would you want to have on the system? What gadgets, DIY projects or just plain cool stuff would you want if you did an in wall tank set up?

kinda depends on how big we are talking. if BIG.....i would want it set up so that I could swing all of the lights and whatever else could be in the way OUT of the way completely, and a system to suspend myself directly over the tank to work on it.......there would be supplemental lighting to take the place of the other lights so I could see what im doing when suspended over the tank working

Okay, that would take care of access and easier maintenance. What about the plumbing? What kind of stuff would you want to change based on what you have now?

At this point I wouldnt change a thing as far as the plumbing and aquascaping even if it was a 500 gallon in wall instead of a self standing 225.
Im working on a little project at the moment on my 225 that I am half done with. I was very pleased with my rocklift/spraybar/overall tank flow program before, but I just ripped it apart and took it to a whole new level and have to brag I think its the cats meow.
sorry...dont want to elaborate any more at the moment, but in the next week or two when i make time to finish it, I will then post some pics and share what I have built. Its unlike any aquascaping/positive flow program ive ever seen before.
My crash was a positive thing in some regards as I would have been pleased for a long time with what I had going.......but Im in the process of making it much, much better yet.

I started to put my 200 in the wall had the hole cut and the stand planned with the wood bought...........Then my 14 yr old son decided that his other Dad's is not where he wanted to be and moved home again. more 2x4's some sheetrock and he got to pick the color to repaint the room.
Tank stays in the dining room. Now a minimum 3 more years 'till one of the kids leaves again, unless they decide to go to UNR and live at home.
Do they ever stay gone?... I have 7 kids, 2 left at home now and they have all moved and come back at least once.

ouch. As long as he was at least 4 years old I would have worked out some kind of required tank maintenance progrom with him for room and board and kept the tank in the room.

I would finish my woodwork so it's an inwall, rather than a onwall

One thing is I'd like it up higher so you can stand and look eye to eye to it.

One thing I'd ensure is that I had a sink nearby (in the same room) and a drain on the floor. Maybe not quite gadgets, but very handy.

I would have to agree with crvz on the sink and drain on floor, I have an in-wall and have the sink but not the drain. The other thing that I found was have a desk and plenty of other working space and make sure you have enough storage space in the room as well.

Got the sink. Cant do the drain but that is one I would do if I could. A drain would be a handy item, not that Im messy or anything...

Tile the floor or use some kind of waterproof flooring and place a water monitor/alarm so you will know about floods quickly. I agree with the heigth, it's nice to look at eye level. I would place the sump away from the tank and not directly underneath - makes it easier to clean the skimmer and get to the return pumps and stuff. I would also use a much larger sump than usual and add a QT or grow out tank to the fish room. I have also seen these huge water reservoirs (ro/di and ASW) that are gravity fed so that water changes can be done with the opening of a valve.

Having the ability to access the tank and sump from all sides makes maintenance so much easier.
