that fits the description of my blue leg hermit. Looks alot like the scarlet leg hermit which is relatively reef safe. I dont know about everyone else but I got a blue leg accidentally in a batch of scarlets. He had a thing for yanking my feather dusters and polyps out and munching them happily which is why he is in the F/O now.

I go by this:

If the LFS doesnt know, go find out before you buy it. If the LFS knows..... still go find out before you buy it. I have learned to not trust any LFS they all seem to be a little behind in the times.

That is why Im asking my tank has been going for about 4 months. I have four damsels, two blue, one domino, a four stripe, a decorator crab and a 5 pound live rock. My algea is out of control and we only have two pet stores with 100 miles. I saw this crab and thought he was beautifull just wondering if any one can Identify it so I can figure out any future campatibility problems

nhilcrest:

I remember some of my earliest 'saltwater' fish were danios and mollies, haha!! Very tough little beasties, and great for beginning saltwater hobbyists. Always fun to acclimate them back to freshwater later on

Sometimes I feel there are no stupid hobbyists,
...only stupid crabs, stupid algae, stupid diseases, stupid equipment, stupid tank stands, and really stupid fish

Hello nhilcrest,

Good to have you here!
Be wary of unknown hermits! There are a few types commonly sold in the reef business, usually Blue Legs; Scarlet Reef Hermits; Red Legs; and a couple more. Most of these, by themselves are pretty harmless, though their benefit in a coral reef tank is questionable. All are omnivorous and opportunistic feeders. In larger numbers, they may eat your snails and irritate your corals.

Many pet stores and some LFS will often carry other varieties of hermits that can grow large and even prey on your livestock.

These are the common hermits sold in the reef trade:
Scarlet Reef Hermit (Paguristes cadenati)

Blue Leg Hermit (Clibinarius tricolor), may be Phimochirus operculatus

Red Leg Hermit (Clibinarius digueti)

There are many closely related species of these crabs; I've had some Blue Legs that grew much larger than others, though they looked the same.
I personally avoid hermits after bad experiences with the Blue Legs killing my snails. I do keep a couple of Scarlet's, which are more benign, as they are neat to watch.
Please read this article:
http://www.animalnetwork.com/fish/li...=&RecordNo=166

If the crab doesn't look like one of the above, watch it carefully, especially if it grows larger.
HTH,
Dick)

Not to bring them down but the pet store I got the crab at was petco. I asked the lady what kind of hermit crab it was because I had never seen one quite like it before and she said oh its a regular hermit crab. I just shook my head and thought well good it should get along fine in my regular tank with my regular fish and regular live rock. Sometimes I wonder how stupid fish store workers are, or do they just not care at all.
