Identification Help
Can someone identify these 'cyst looking' things. Are they harmful and if so how should I kill them. I have several in my 55g tank and they are growing pretty fast. From about dime size to quarter size in a few weeks/month.

Looks like a tunicate. Some may chime in and say sponge. No argument here they are the same in most respects and not harmful. Those look like they are a pretty cool color.

I agree with fly, its a sponge, harmless filter feeder.

The body never moves, but they do have 4 tentacle looking things that I have seen move once or twice.

I have the exact same thing in my tank. One week there was one, the next week i find them all over my rock, heater, intakes, powerheads, but not nearly as dense when compared to your picture. I thought they were a miniutre form of a feather duster because if you look at them real close they have "feathers" that protrude outward. Slightly brownish-red.

Tunicate/HH sponge. I have all sorts of colors in my tank, white, gorgeous yellow, green, red. Most you will find on the shady sides of rocks or even under them. They grow like mad in my sump. No need to worry. They are filter feeders. Generally, if they are growing, it means that you have a good system growing. They are a bit more hardy than the decorative sponges you find in the stores, but to note, they will not grow in systems which are still cycling.

you have 2 different critters in the pic. the gray blobs are sponges and the white tubes with read tufts are featherdusters.

blobs: no clue, but awesome feather dusters. I just found a bunch under my mushroom rock, hope they spread out in the open. Mine are peach color. The color of yours is awesome.
