Ideas for a large display tank??
OK, so here's my plan....
We have very fancy new building just opened at the vet school here in philly. The atrium is vast, but a little sterile, so I thought it would be the perfect location for a stunning show tank. The powers-that-be are sounding interested, and I'm due to meet the architect in a week or two. And on top of that, I thought, a great reason to set up a student marine aquatic society to help plan/design/build/maintain. So, as a prelude, I thought I would get everyone's vote - how big would you go and how would you have it? The space is big, L-shaped, and fronted by glass (lots of light). Would you rather have a walk-around viewable from all side? L-shaped and viewable from 2 sides? Viewable from the front only? Any other suggestions?
As a bonus I thought the student group/fact-finding part of the exercise could go to Penn State and visit Sanjay Joshi and the 500 gall tank Penn State have....(!)

the budget is really the key here, but if it was what ever you want, i would shoot for a very long tank, inverted bow like knowitall said, and deep enough to make some really nice rockscapes.

At the moment it's just an idea, but I'm cautiously optimistic....
Thanks for the thoughts - it needs to be shallow enough for maintenance but I like the long bowfront idea... And the build thread is a given!

I would love to see something long and relatively shallow (24" or less) that is viewable front/back. Good luck getting approved!!

My other thought was something along the oregonreef.com idea - fairly deep, with a channel down the middle that gives a real feeling of depth. Budget will be a big questionmark....

how much room will you have for equipment. the bigger the tank the bigger the ROOM needed to support the tank. having a good sized ROOM would be best.

Agreed. My first thought is where the room will be, and I'm still mulling that one over - depends on one of a couple of locations. In the new build there is a basement, but big drop to overcome and some engineering issues. Not sure about what we can do...

hard to come up with ideas without a layout of the area. maybe you could make the tank L shaped and inside the L make a room for the equipment. maybe even a monster U shape and have the inside an equipment room.

I have also seen a U shaped tank with a door on the back to access the equipment room.... Just an Idea
