ID on soft coral.. Please help.
Hello I am new... Not just to the forum but also to this addiction
So if anyone could be so kind to help me out, I bought a soft coral from my LFS and he of course said it would be fine in my Red Sea Max (completely stock). Well 3 days later and only a little bit of it has really opened up. I don't know if I have it too high up near the light.. Please help!!

Welcome to TRT
It kinda looks like an angry colt coral - If you have it up high I'd try moving it a bit lower

If possible I'd make one change at a time so you can tell what helped
but if lower means less flow than move it lower

think the same..
and if.. it will require low water movement.. high quality water.. adn live phytoplacton to keep it..
i had one.. orange-yellow (between this 2 colours) and after 1 month was starving.. and then died.. so i understud i did a mistake buying it..
but was marvelous..
btw.. i kept it not on direct light and sees to work.. but .. donno if we are speaking on the same coral

I also think its a carnation. Its too bad your LFS wasn't honest with you but they prolly didn't know. This happens all the time though so its best to research what you want and go out and buy it. (The coral is non photosynthetic and normally doesnt get enough to eat in an aquarium)

Very nice coral but like everyone said, hard to keep. Unfortunately many LFSs sell things they probably shouldn't and don't tell you certain specimens are for very experienced tanks and aquarists. I have a good LFS and they tell the truth, most of the time, but they also have a return policy that is fair!
Welcome to TRT and the hobby!

Yep, it's a nepthyad (either dendro or sclero). These guys are close to impossible to keep in even the most advanced systems.
It's unfortunate your LFS even stocks them.
