I think one of my seahorses is pregnant.

Over the last few days one of my male seahorses pouch has been getting bigger, hopefully he's pregnant and not got something wrong with him. Now i'll have do loads of research on how to care for them.

Hi Bollox:

I'm only a seahorse keeper wannabe...so no help from me. What kind of seahorses do you have?

I have 2 males and 2 females, they are captive bred seahorses from the company Ocean Rider aand they are the sunburst variety.

Congratulations!

Ocean Riders are Hippocampus erectus (both Mustangs and Sunbursts are this speci).

The gestation is usually about 3 weeks, but varies greatly with OR for some reason (inbreeding?).

You should probably prepare a baby tank, 10 g is good. I keep H. reidi and I've just devised a neat spray bar gadget that helps keep the babies from getting stuck on the surface.

You'll need a sponge filter and air pump, and something for holdfasts for the babies. Erectus babies are born able to hitch (unlike H. reidi that take a couple of weeks to develop that ability). Plastic canvas is great for this, available at WalMart in the hobbies and crafts section. It's stuff used to do needlepoint.

The babies can be fed newly hatched brine shrimp, copepods etc. Most feed brine, but copepods are a better food.
