Well, I confirmed that I do indeed have flatworms. I knew this already but was really hoping that I was wrong. I siphoned quite a few out last night into a filter sock. I put the sock in a bucket of freshwater and watched all the little red $@#* melt while the water turned a lovely shade of deep yellow/rust. There was a wonderful smell too!!!
I plan to observe the tank and siphon more tonight. It really didn't take too long to remove almost all that I could see. This got me to thinking ... I just got this tank put back together after a moderate tank crash and other than the flatworms, it looks the best it has in a long time. I'm really hesitant to risk nuking the tank with flatworm toxin after reading somemore about eposides of infestations treated with FWE where disasterous results ensued. So now I'm wondering where these guys came from. I have added a few pieces of coral in the last few months ... but I always inspect before putting them in my tank. Haven't added live rock in two years. Could my recent tank crash have fueled them as I have nevere seen them in my tank before (which means they were probably there just not in a large population)? I haven't had any of the fish that I posted about eairler so I don;t think natural predators have been keeping them in check.
Anyway, I guess that I might be leaning toward investing in a wrasse and/or mandarin to see if I can get them to control the population naturally rather than adding chemicals to my reef. Does anyone know if the blue/green mandarin will eat flatworms?
Thoughts and opinions are welcome!
