i scratched my tank :(
well i didn't.. but someone else did. really really bad. it's a tru-vu plexi tank that's been up for 2 months. the scratches are bad. deep....
can i buff them out without breaking down my tank? how would i do that? i don't wanna freak out my fishes with me sanding down my front pannel for hours on end, but i think that's the only way.
... so where do i start? how about... a new tank (bigger) tank
..... but eh.. i donno. just makes me sad looking at it.

is it on the outside or inside?
is there a colored panel on the backside or can you just turn the tank around?
i dont know anything about plexi, but my 220g has scratches all over the lower 4" because of a magfloat picking up sand. odd thing is i keep noticing more scratches, i dont know how since i got rid of the sand 8 months ago. im starting to wonder if their stress cracks

the scratches are on the inside of the tank. black back pannel so reversing it won't work. i would LOVE to get a new bigger tank, but since this one is only two months old i'm afraid i'll kill everything in there when i try to move. my coral and fish aren't really all that adjusted right now, and i'd hate to stress them out any more...
i think i'll try to buff out the scratches with micro-mesh... hum.. but.. a new tank does sound goooooood... who wants to call my girlfriend and tell her i NEED a new tank?

I don't have any experience with acrylic tanks, but I do remember seeing someone selling repair kits for acrylic.

the repair kits i've seen require an empty dry tank. i'd like to do this without removing the water.

Don't tell her, just say "I don't know what you are talking about, my tank has always been this big" You must use Jedi Mind Tricks, young man!

You can repair the current tank with water and critters. Just pick up a micro mesh kit. It's a little bit of work, but pretty easy.

I would say over a 30 minut period keep putting your hand in the tank and gently waving it around. Get everyone in there used to it, so when you start sanding away, your not going to freak anything in the tank out too much.

I vote sanding kit!
2 of my 3 tanks are acrylic. My 360 is 1 inch thick.

You could just leave the scratch alone for a while and upgrade the tank in a few months. How big is it?

I sanded my 11yr old 180g tank a few years ago. Was glad I did... Sanded the inside with inhabitants and had no problems (fish, softies, SPS, clams, shrimp, filter feeders, etc.)
There is a simple technique to it. I’ll try to find my thread about it and post the url.

the tank is 55gals... 36" long. i wasn't going to go much bigger. maybe just a 90gal that's 4' long.
i would leave it alone, but i can't even look at my tank right now without getting pissed off. totally defeating the calming affect of a reef tank.
