i saw a morish idol today!!! he was SICK
so today i stroll into a LFS to grab some salt. of course i had to go check out the fish and coral. so i see some great blastos and some killer sps frags and start walking to the fish section to find a morish idol in a 50 gal tank. he was tatered, covered in ich and his eyes looked like crap. when i talk to staff the guy said the manger wanted to do a nice fish only tank. did i mention the tank had no live rock and he was huge 7-8 long. and now he wants to sell the thing for $200. i hate it when fish stores do this!!!

I've seen fish in similar conditions - makes me very depressed personally. Last one I saw was a copperbanded butterfly - we're supposed to be responsible in this hobby, not stripmining the oceans for fish that are just destined to die...

Oh noooooooo! From what I have read on this fish, they are NOT meant for captivity in our tanks...they are one of the fish that we should leave in the ocean...that makes me so sad! And mad at the same time

Sorry but I don't think the majority of stores have any more insight into successfully keeping these fish than anyone else. They are stressed a lot in capture and transport and their nutr.itional needs are never fully addressed in captivity, hence the lousy survival rates.
30 odd years ago when I got into the hobby, we had to make it up as we went, and the learning curve was really steep. After 10+ years of marine info on the internet, there are some fish that really shouldnt be sold, but yet they still show up in dealers tanks, not always at the dealers request

Those are great lookin fishes, but just not meant to be kept was what I was always told. I'm shocked they could try to sell it for 2 hundos in that condition though. That's kind of ambitious at best. Anyways, hope he ends up in some vast 20,000 gallon city aquarium or something.

my lfs had 3 of them in a HUGE tank and they were eating and healthy. They weren't for sell he had them for display only and as far as I know they are still there but like I said the tank was huge had to be at lest 8 ft long and 4-5 ft wide.
I cant point fingers because about a month ago I bought a mandarin fish just to have it disappear. So I'm as guilty as the store that I bought it from.
