I Need Major Help
Hello All
Newbie here! I Just found this site and I hope you can help me out. For the Past 5 years I have had an exceptional 200 gallon reef maintained by myself as if it were my child. within the last past year my wife and I had our first baby and now the Reef is 2nd in line when it comes to attention and it's killing me to see the tank falling off like this. I've been fighting Hair Algae like Mad and I can't and I mean can't get rid of it!! I've tried crabs, nudibrachs, and Sea Hares. The sea hares have worked the best but when they are finished eating all of the hair they just die off from starvation. I can't see spending the money on them every 4 months just to watch them die 2 weeks later. I have a mimic tang in their and he eats it but not enough of it to keep it under control. if you guys and gals have any other solutions please fill me in. Because I'm just about ready to shut it down and give the hobby a rest for a few years unless I can clear it up soon.
Thanks in advance
Did I mention I hate hair algae

Could be DSB or rocks need cooking. Mine comes and goes. Never really gets out of hand. When I see it I just slow down on food and do an extra WC.

All Right, Go easy on me. What's an LR. and I haven't tested my water in god knows how long. I only test my water when my polyps on my hard corals aren't open and that hasn't been since it went throuh its cycle four years ago.

I reduced my lighting times and it went away. Maybe I was lucky, but it has not returned.

A rabbitfish may do you good once you find the source and take care of it. They are HA eating machines!

I tried the lighting thing for 2 months and did nothing. The live rock has been in the tank since day 1 then added more 2 years into it.
if you say rabbit fish, I'm going to try it!
My sand bed is about 3 in the front and 4 3/4" in the back.
This is what it looked like last year.

I see a mimic tang!
I've a foxface rabbit fish and it doesnt touch algae, but I've also heard that they may plow through it. If it doesnt work, however, you may want to start analyzing what could be the source that fuels the algae. Make sure that your nutrient export is capable of handling the nutrient load of the tank (which impacts your flow, skimming, feeding quantities and frequency, among other things). Good luck!

That is stunning! Too much to go to waste! Try switching out the sand for new. I think that can work wonders. How about your lightbulbs? Have you changed them?
