I Lost My DSB!!!!

so this is what i did all day Sunday!!! my DSB is gone! it took 12 hours from start to fish back in. the next afternoon i was able to put the coral back in!

this is what it looked like before. notice the nice 8"+ sand dunes. and the cloudy water due to sand storm.

here is the living room in total tank disrepair. lucky for me Nikki was not home for all of this. mainly for the fact that the 6 mil lined kiddie pool leaked. not to bad but enough water was on the floor that i would get in trouble. got that cleaned up just in time!

behind the display is a 40g refuge/sump. this is where i put all of my clams and coral. this has a PH in it for circulation. the temp control is in here also so the corals for the most part did not notice anything at all except for a brief interlude in the air, and a much lower light intensity for the day (cloudy day on the reef. )

the fish/snails/shrimp went in the 10g on top of the 55 filled with water. i still had to make up 40g of ASW for this.

as all the rocks were coming out i used this as a time to remove any aiptasie/mojano/razor caleurpa i could. i also shook each piece of LR in old SW to get off any detritus or sand that had settled on the rocks.

almost all of the rocks fit in to the kiddie pool. some of the taller ones had to be put in the 55g.

i had a couple of nice surprises while removing the critter. over 6 months ago i put in 3 peps. i figured one was still alive, i was prepared for the size of it!!!! it was easily 3" long! i saw the molts so i knew it was still in there, but did not really see the size of the molts. about 3-4 months ago i bought 12 SW ghost shrimp for the tank. they are great scavangers and i was hoping they would breed so i would have more plankton. i figured they all eventually died, but low and behold there was still one alive and well!! it was running around under the rocks. it was a nice sized 2" ghost strimp.

i also have a lot of those little clear under rock corals growing, always a good thing to have.

this is a full shot with the corals in.

and this is the right side.

the 10g with the critters dropped close to 7 degrees in temp in the 12 hours of doing this. i pumped all of the water back into the display made sure the salinity was right then threw in a heater. when the temp matched the 10g i put those critters in. it took almost over night for the temp to match refuge where the corals were, so this is why i waited until the next afternoon.

so far no losses.

DSB-Deep Sand Bed

thanks all! so far things are good. i like the look so far. i was afraid of not having sand. luckily the bottom of the tank is just above eye level so you do not even notice that there is not any sand in the tank at all.

i was a little worried about the rockwork, but it seems to be holding steady.
