Now wait a minute. If you are all about the hobby and love rics then you shouldn't need to be bribed at all. Unless, that is, you are just looking for the best of both worlds. That would be understandable as well I suppose.

As I am well aware of.
Now, on the phosphate removal thread I gave you something else to spend your money on, or to get Santa to bring you next year. It is actually cheaper than many large LVD TV's and would probably bring you much more entertainment and enjoyment.
Hello Randy Scrooge! How are you doing today with your bio ball factory?

Denitrator coils are a good topic to discuss when you have nothing else to discuss for a week or two.

Me? A scrooge? Nevah!!!!!! Ok, maybe I am. OK, is this better? Instead of just bioballs and a denitrator coil, you throw an ATS into it and use SM for tech support on it?
I am a sick puppy today.

ATS - Algae Turf Scrubber. Its basically an acrylic box that you pump water through just like a sump. It has a screen that floats in it that algae grows on. You have to "scrub" the algae out once a week or so. It is lit with daylight bulbs to help grow the algae. Then, you have to run carbon to keep your tank from turning yellow. The last one I saw for sale was about 400 dollars.
Then, a denitrator coil is nothing but a pipe with 1/4" tubing running inside it with a handful of bioballs. The concept is that in the 1/4" tubing, the bacteria strip the water of oxygen, then when it reaches the pipe itself, the bacteria convert nitrate back to nitrite and then to nitrogen gas by stripping the oxygen from it. They sell for about 200 dollars and up retail.
But then, to keep the nitrate production up, you run bioballs. That means a wet/dry filter. 300 bucks or so for a good sized on.
When its all said and done, you end up with about 1200 dollars in the setup. After 6 months to a year, you ditch it all and get a sump, skimmer, and some clams. Right after you realize all that, you cuss me like a dog for ever mentioning one to you.
But, you have to realize that at times, my sense of humor is so warped that it makes curly Q fries from Arbys look straight.
Sidenote: If you really want to know about ATS/coils, there are some resources on them. They do work, just not worth the effort if you have other means to do it. There was a thread on ATS'es that got closed and hidden that is where the line in my signature from tdwyatt came from and I can dig up the threads on the denitrator coils. I am going to try the coil on my 120 because of the way its going to be set up (no rocks in the display).
As for refugiums and ATSes, I have never understood or agreed with the concept of intentionally growing algae in a tank......

Now for a nano tank, you need a 24" diameter section of PVC pipe that is 72" tall and build a skimmer out of it. Then it will keep your water crystal clear for you. Of course your skimmer holds 3-10 times as much water as your tank but still.........
I told you, a curly Q fry

That's not frustrating. Frustrating is trying to watch Jeff Dunham and Peanut or Achmed without sound.
