While both of these are somewhat acceptable options, neither prevents every possible mishap. Backup power won't prevent wayward snails, pump failures or any of Murphy's other attempts at creating floods. Multiple, properly placed antisiphon holes and a sufficently sized
sump are the best way to go.
Placing antisiphon holes above the waterline but inside the overflow box will prevent them from clogging with algae and significantly reduce the chance of a snail blocking it at the exact second that the power goes out. Placing the outlet of the return just below the surface as mentioned is also a good practice to prevent potential floods.
