I have a Nitrite Problem HELP!

I need Help! I have a 120 gallon sw tank, 1 skimmer, I bio wheel, and hydro. My fish include two tangs yellow and blue, two clowns (nimo). Cleaners include 6 hermits, 5 snails, and in process of getting the shrimo once my water problem subsides. I have had the tank for 3 months. First time saltwater tried. My problem is the nitrite.
I have tried the water changes. 30 percent even. and the nitrite is still high, about 3.0 PPm. I also tried to stop feeding for two days and also added salt 1 teaspoon per 10 gallons. this is day three, and my fish are shimmying, or shall I say in disstress. everything else is in order. nitrate at 30PPm. ph 8.3 alklintiy is at 180. I did have a nitrate problem but I seem to have that under control. What am I doing wrong?

What type of skimmer? How often were you doing the water changes? Whats a hydro? How much live rock do you have? Do you have a sand bed if so how deep? The first thing I would do is take the bio-wheel off if you have live rock. Did you see your tank go through a cycle? When you set it up. The TRT will help you get your tank on track.

You said that you added salt, 1 TSP per 10 gallons, This has me very worried,... Why did you do that? What is your current salinity?

How long has this tank been running, how long have all the fish been in this tank?

Thanks,
Whiskey

My sand bed is about 1half inch. I have been changing the water 20 percent every other day. I have a Prizm protein skimmer. Why take the bio wheel off? sorry Hydro ummmmm lol mistake. My tank went through a cycle. No fish died yet. TRT? still real new at this but getting there.

When your tank went through its cycle did you see your nitrites go down to 0ppm? TRT The Reef Tank. My bad. If you have live rock you might not need a bio-wheel they do the same thing.

Ooops sorry that's not exactly what I meant. You said your salinity is fine but what are the actual #'s?? I meant the test kit you were using to test for the nitrates and nitrites...what brand is that test? Sorry about that!

What reading is the green? How long have the fish been in your tank? How long has the tank had salt water in it?

Thanks,
Whiskey
