I hate to start another salt thread but here I go!
Hi Everyone!
Its almost time for me to order more salt. Ive been using reef crystals for well over a yr now and have been very happy with it, but lately Ive been hearing bad things about it. Ive been hearing the calc levels have been off? So now I'm thinking I should try another type? If so what would be the best for my tank 150, 40 gallon sump mostly soft corals with a few frogspawn and candy canes. I also have fish shrimp and snails.
Thanks for any input.
Patrick

Honestly, for what you keep any salt would be fine. Calcium/alkalinity levels are not critical for softies, and the few LPS you've got are not going to be a demand on that which can be found in any salt, even without supplimentation. If there's no problem with your tank, why are you trying to fix it?

Most use regular IO and add calcium.

Stick with the reef crystals, or go for the gusto and try TMPR.

Well my understanding was that they had either changed the ingredients or their was a bad batch floating around out there.

Is it really worth the extra money esp since I mostly have soft corals?

Stick with what you have if you just have softies.
I use IO and bump up the ca and alk when I need it. I like it this way cause I have more control over the calcium and what type of calcium I use. I only use Seachem products to control ca and alk.

for LPS & SPS...Kent..no questions..Kent has excellent levels of Mag,Calcium,Alk, & others..no phosphates or nitrates..all good..no problems yet..besides its easy to overdose on salt during a water change. i can go 2 or 3 weeks with no changes & still have a good calcium reading

I've heard a few grumblings myself, but I test each bucket I open up. I've not had a problem as of yet, and don't intend to change anytime soon. I think I've been using RC for about 2 years now.

How valid is that 'rule' about switching salt brands? You know, the one where you should slowly switch over to a different brand?
How much damage can really be done by just stopping cold-turkey brand 'A' and using brand 'B' ?

I used to have three brands of salt in the house... Oceanic, IO, and RC. I didnt really care which I used for a while, and I never saw a problem. I wouldnt be concerned about it.
