I Fried My Brain

It's not even funny. The brain coral that I purchased last week is dead. I'm sure it was because I placed it up top directly under the MH's. I moved it to the sand yesterday but there's very little flesh left and what's there is being eaten by the peps.

This is an open invitation to bash me! I purchased a coral that I didn't know how to care of, and I feel terrible about it. It was a beautiful creature........

I have to say that favia brains aren't the easiest to take care of- not sure if you have an open or closed (favia) brain? I've had a long battle with mine. First it was hair algae over a year ago- it literally had 2 polyps left after that ordeal. And the growth is soooo slow - maybe 1/4 of it has come back. Then I recently added more LR in January and had to redo all the rock. I moved the brain coral to the very top directly under my PC lighting- started to recede again- so I moved it back to the bottom part of the tank and now it's slowly coming back. It takes a matter of days to kill one, but yet years to get one to look nice. I feel your pain and I'd have to say it's one of the harder corals imo.

No one's gonna bash you- just take that down as a learning experience and go from there.

EDIT: to attach picture... hate that pic- looks so bad....

If there is flesh left, then there may be hope... the peps are prolly only cleaning up the dead parts.

Leave the skeleton in there! I had a maze coral that a friend gave me to try and save die. So I thought. I left the skeleton in there. Well, months down the road I saw what looked like 3 baby corals growing... now, I have a 50 cent piece and quarter size piece of maze coral growing happily again. I thought it had died, but there was some tissue left and it grew.

Thanx everyone for your support. I really do feel crappy about this. After taking that little personal "dig" in the "What's happening to TRT" thread, it made it even harder to tell you folks. But I did what I did, and I'll take your advice and tuck him in a corner to watch for any signs of life.

Thanx Everyone!! You people are awesome!!

Btw...I think the brain you got was a Trachyophillia.

In the future, I think you could have treated it like a plate coral, for the most part.

Put it directly on the substrate at the bottom of your tank (maybe prop it up just a bit with a sea-shell or something if you want), and out in the open where it can get good (but not blasting) flow, and good light.

If it's any consolation, my first coral loss was a Trachy:

(if you read the thread...you'll find a VERY similar tone to yours...hehehe)
