I figured out my problem

A couple days ago I potsed about my gonipora looking bad and untill I noticed my frogspawn polyps bailing out it didn't dawn on me what the problem was. I keep my tank at 79 degrees. Well with the summer heat wave we had here and the fact my chiller set up wasn't complete my tank ran up to 84 a couple days. My gony and frogspawn bailed out trying to find a cooler temp. I read and figured out that once bail out starts no matter what you do nothing will be able to stop it. My frogspawn is doing well considering I have 5 of them in my nurse tank because they all ejected. They are doing well and hopefully survive. The gony is missing over half its polyps and will to my sorrow die. This made me realize how important a stable tank temp is.

The only good news coming from all my summer time problems is after reading and looking up 9 million things I beleave that with in a couple weeks I will no longer have 1 anemone. I am pretty sure that I will have 2. I noticed over the last couple days my sebae anemone was changing to a darker color in its tenticles. When I first bought it, it had almost completely white tenticles with alot of brown in the base. well the anemone now has a area that has changed alot and seems to be splitting away from the rest of the anemone. Now I am probabley wrong on whats going on but I did my best to read what I could find and I am waiting on a book to try and help me figure whats going on with it slightly better but from every thing I found and read it seems like the anemone is getting ready to split.

Heh guess what your rite the peice that is coming off is imo actualy dieing But then again I am actualy not upset because I have read that sebae anemones tend to die quite easily in a home system. I like anemones and after my new tank is up and running I will try them again but for now I will be putting nothing else in my 55.

not to flame you but i think you should be upset....this creature came from the ocean, and it was our responsiablility to keep it alive....i didnt keep mine alive either and im pissed at my self for even buying it.....and if you read that they tend to die, why did you buy it....

most anemone's are very difficult to keep. it is very tempting to get one. i know, i did. we have not exactly figured out what they need to live. it is tough getting into SW. in FW you are just about guaranteed to be able to keep anything you buy from the LFS alive. they usully readily eat anything you put in the tank. it takes a while to get out of that mindset. it took me years to figure out that i had to do research on any critter i wanted to put in my aquarium. most LFS's buy whatever they think they can sell. most do not know the individual requirements of the critters. i know this limits the amount of stuff you can get at your LFS, but it for the better of the critter. i have my LFS order me the critters i want.

mnreefman-boy you are PO'd at yourself for trying one. it is a learning experience.

I wouldn't be quick to jump and say that temp is the issue with (at least) the frogspawn...

The average temp on my tank is 82-84 degrees... On occasion it has 86 and 87... Even with the higher temps that my tank runs at, I have not had any major losses. Once I upgraded to the MH, my frogspawn, torch, and other corals as well as my anemone's have really showed their potential.

I would be more concerned about your lighting than tank temp...

When you have an equation with as many variables as a reef tank has, you can't throw an important one out (like lighting) and point the finger at a lesser one as the culprit for not summing up correctly.

A mnreef I read about the anemone after I bought it so that was just a tad bit to late to say oops I guess I shouldn't buy it. Next I am still learning alot and need a little slack when you wanna get upset ask me why it doesn't effect me such as it does you.

Next the gony after I bought it I found out that 99 out of every 100 bought die. I bought it and once again found out about all there problems with owning them. Then once again what am I gonna do since I already bought it.

The frogspawn was doing fine for the last 6 months and yes even though I have poor lighting by every ones standards and still thrived for the last 6 months. I read and still am convinced it was because my tempature change dramaticaly in a 7 hour period. Everything in my tank is used to a low temp and would have been fine at a slow temp rise but my tank temp went up way to quick for it not to effect any thing. This is my opinion and I am sticking to it unless some one can actualy prove that it was some thing else. Ya gotta remember that a 5 degree temp shift in such a short time is very very bad in sw or fw.

As for me being upset about the loss of my creatures your rite I am but I also must take into account I got in over my head rite off the bat. I have bought no more corals for my tank since I started useing this forum and learning. I never heard much on anemones untill after I picked mine up. I don't meen to sound cold but ya gotta remember that not every one will beat them selves down because they screwed up and lost some thing. I learned a valued lesson and will remember it in the future but I can't beat my self up over me being stupid and not reading first.
