Exclamation

I figured it out!!!

I finally have a great idea for a DIY chiller for cheap. Using a phosban reactor inside my mini fridge and then just attach a temp controller to a pump to circulate the water through when the temperatere gets too high. this way you dont need to worry about metal coils rusting and the reactor would provide enough volume to still get the water cold. plus you have a mini fridge to store your fish food in.

Ok, now take my precious idea apart...

wont work/been tried, not enough btu's, remember refers, chillers and ac units remove heat, they do not chill.

Unless you have a small tank.

Search the DIY archives for chillers GregT and I built using ac units, lots of information there.

Good Luck

How much cheaper can that be than a ~$300 chiler. By the time you get a controller and mini fridge, tubing, etc your probably about at that cost???
I could be wrong?? But a heck of a lot simpler and more convenient. But hey if you prefer DIY....Go for it. I have seen some one just run a few hundred feet of tubing inside a mini fride through a pump to cool a tank, must need a controler as well.

FWIW:
I got my 1/10 HP chiller shipped for just under $300. It also works great and has no problems on my 110. Plus it comes with a dual stage controller as well and digital temp readout.

Well i save cost in the following ways.
got an older mini fridge for free
already have the tubing
i would have to get a controller and a pump if i got a chiller anyways so i am halfway there. plus i would have the remaining fridge space to store fish food etc so i get that added benifit. I am working on a different plan instead of a reactor. I'll post it in the diy forum. something along the lines of inserting coated metal plates to remove heat as mafiaman said.
