I checked out this MACO site

I need a calcium reacter. I had been looking at a purchase of a Deltec reacter. Made in Germany. I've heard very good things about it.

Then I see at MACO they are offering a course in building your own. Is this practical, or should I just buy one. I'm fairly handy, I know I could build it according to the course material. Just not sure how effective the planned model is. Of course I don't know the 1st thing about calcium reactors. Maybe they are all just the same with marginal usability differences.

Anybody familiar with the course enough to know if the kit proposed on the course would be of equal basic functionality as a purchased reactor?

Brian Fergueson (sp?), the instructor, is one of the guys who's name comes up everytime I've seen someone asking about where to get a reactor. You'll probably find that if you follow his instructions, your reactor will work quite superbly.

Well just my opinion here but by the time you pay for the course I think it is something like $75 then buy all the tools and materials you will need to build the item you may have just well went out and purchased one. thats just my opinion though.

Let us know if you go that way and how you make out cost wise and what not.

Calcium reactors are probably one of the easiest pieces of equipment that the DIYers can do. all it is its a container to hold media, a pump to recirculate and pressurize the reactor and a CO2 solenoid and regulator (add a pH controller as well to stabilize the reactor and make your life simple). You can make one out of a filter cartridge housing on the cheap and a small pump (like Ehiem 1048). Just study a few pictures of rectors and you will understand how it all works for the most part.

with that said. I like my Korallin reactor, built like a tank and well designed.

I would not recommend a deltec ca reactor. I had problems with the aquabee pump egging out the bushing and taking the pump out every three months. I went to a Geo and was never happier.

but yes, you can DIY one fairly easy....
