i cant take the wait!!
sorry, i just have to vent, got this stupid 120 set up, put base rock in, and its showing ammonia on my test kit, guess there was alot of gunk on the rock that needs to rot away. im skimming nice and easy. but waiting on this junk to cycle is killing me. its only been a week. ammonia is hitting 2-3 on my test. how much crud can be in 100 lbs of dead rock? should this cycle faster than normal. would the 50lbs of live rock in my 46 handle the bioload if i added it? only problem is id have to add corals and fish and such with it, thats why im waiting. GOD!! cmon cmon cmon cmon...

it sat in my friends driveway for 4 months, how much deader can you get it?? didnt have any smell to it, but its showing ammonia, i put a few medium sized rocks out of my other tank in, a couple snails and a mushroom made it past my inspection, (very small black cerith snails.) they are all fine. what are the chances my tests are off that much? or does it take time for ammonia to kill?

it is prolly the algae growing on it. my rock sat on the front deck for 7 months. it had some algae growing on it when i finally got around to using it. this was not stored in water, it just held water enough to allow algae to grow on it.

I had sand sitting in a bucket and with a little water after replacing the sand bed. Sat out on my deck 2 days (no rain average temp) when I did dump it found a bunch of my missing snails and crabs(alive!!!) Scooped em up with what water was left in the other bucket and started sifting thru some smelly sand. Found more. Reacclimated just in case as far as I can tell they are still kicking. Sometimes I think certain inverts are just about indistructable.

But you already knew that I am sure! It's just killing you that you have to do it. Think of it this way you could have went out and got 100 lbs of cured live rock at 4.99 lbs if your lucky. So you could have spent 500.00 to get less cycle or wait a month.......
I would definately sit and duct tape my hands for a month!
Or do like me and go ever few weeks spending 100.00 each visit for lr and the tank looking bare until I got enough rock for it to look decent. That sucked just as bad but was able to move the eel so I watched my lone eel for a month make new dens throwing sand everywhere everytime I added rock. Hoped it would stop once he had his homes dug out but know now he has to clean them all every hour on the hour.

I'd wait 6 months minimum.

I was just about to copy the lyrics of Carly Simon's Anticipation, but after reading them more closely, I didn't want you to think I was hitting on you.
Be patient, my friend...it will be well worth it in the end.

Just keep your eye on the proverbial prize. A large stable reef tank.

I would take some really nice cured rock from the other tank if You can and have some and place it in the new tank and You will be finished in no time, I do think that the 50 lbs of live rock would balance your tank out really fast, I have had to do it in the past that way. JMO
