I am Soooo Happy!!

We hadn't seen the Fire Shrimp since the day after we put him in the tank. yesterday he showed up behind some rock, but didn't look good. A few minutes later he was laying on the bottom. I managed to touch him with a piece of wire and he just disintegrated!! My wife was devastated, and I felt pretty bad. Tonight, while feeding the other shrimp, he comes strolling out like nothing's wrong. He must have molted and what I saw yesterday was just a case. It was so perfect though!! It was red, had the antennae and looked just like him!! Woa!!

cool! I always get a little jolt inside when I see a shell, just for that split second cuz I think it's dead and then it's like, oh yea he's getting bigger! Glad he's still around, those shrimp are so pretty!

Sweet butch, glad he was still around.
how about a nice set of pictures of him? they are one of my favorite shrimp.

with iodine thing, it is very hard to test for iodine in our tanks . if you do use it be very careful, too much is a very bad thing

Sorry, it is not the iodine that precipitates the molting event, but any stressor due to the water change from pH change to changes in salinity (these are the most frequant cause of non-growth-related molts). Believe it or not, drops in nitrates due to water changes may also precipitate these molts, as will temp changes. Sometimes it may be the simpe stressor of moving the specimens from one system to another with rpid acclimitizdations. Larger shrimps molt less often than the very young ones do, but all will occasionally as they grow, and water changes (especially those that make the entire water column drop salinity) are just another stressor for these animals that results in these molts.

Yeah i remember waking up one morning to my "cleaner shrimp molt" being carried around by a hermit and i freaked out. I totally thought it was the real deal. Now that I know now, I can laugh about it! Later Ryan

re

HAH,
that's just plain amazing. To me it's just as amazing as seeing a clown feed an anemone. You just can't believe your eyes sometimes.
