I am officially a bonehead!
Well, I pulled a bonehead move. I did a water change last night, and in my infinite stupidity, forgot to turn the heaters back on. I checked my controller logs and the temp got down to 74. I just turned the heaters back on about an hour ago and it is up to about 76.
I think everything SHOULD be OK, but I am looking for opinions and if anyone has ever had this happen before... One of my acans was receding this evening, and I am hoping that it was the temp swing that did it and nothing else!

what is your tank usually at? I had this happen once when I left a fan on after my halides shut off (got a timer for it finally). The tank temp dropped 5 degrees in an hour. Everything made it through perfectly fine but man was i stressing for a bit.

Also, I think everyone in this hobby would be an official bonehead at some point if not multiple times! Hope everything makes it through!

My temp fluctuates from 78.2 to 78.4 I keep it pretty tight. It dropped over a couple hours and staid between 74 and 75 for close to 8 hours.... I REALLY need to get my email alerts setup. That way it can alert me when I am being a bonehead!!!
Any ideas on the temp being that low for a period of 8-12 hours?
Thanks!
Don

We had a heater go out overnight, but everything was fine over time.

yeah, everything should be fine as stated. 74 is the low end of most reef creatures tollerance but it wasn't an extreme drop from where you were at so I wouldn't worry much about it.

I quit using heater years ago, back when we live in Kansas and never had a problem with the temp changes

Everything should be perfectly fine. The only real effect cooler water may have on the corals over the long haul is to slow their metabolic rate. They are actually much tougher than humans are, and can survive this where we would die. They may not thrive at the cooler temperatures over long periods of time, but they will survive.
This is actually a much better situation than over heating is. I know this from experience and it was a painful lesson.

Thanks for the reassurance! I figured it would be OK. It is just nice to hear it from someone else! Things are already looking a little better and the acans ate, so I am feeling a little better now
