Hybrid Tang
After more than 2 months of staring at 135 lbs. of live rock, I finally got some fish (and corals) yesterday.
One of the fish I bought was a "Hybrid Tang". I was too excited about finally getting some live stuff in the tank to ask the story behind it. Has anyone ever seen this fish before? My guy at the LFS said it was not a common fish. Just curious.

Mimic, I think
Too far away to tell but it looks just like a Mimic tang. Look it up on the net and verify. Also. if your LFS dosen't know what a Mimic tang is I might be a little worried...They are not common fish kept in stores but they are a very pouplar specimin in this hobby.
Wait to see how it changes shape if it ends up being a Mimic. I use to have one.....They mimic the shape of angels when young and grow into the Common Tang shape (yellow tang) in adulthood.
Good Luck! Looks like a great looking fish

Could be an atlantic blue tang (Acanthurus coeruleus) - they are yellow when a juvenile.

I have seen articles and pics of tangs that had hybridized in the past, but I suspect that in most cases, if a "sport" or variation turns up at the wholesalers, they make something up. Judging from the names on the invoice from shipments I doubt that anyone is taking much time to ID. Taxonomy has pretty strict standards for ID and new species show up all the time. IF you got a nice one and it wasn't priced high because of it "rarity" Kewl

It does resemble one of the pics of the Mimic Tang. It also however, has the mark of the Shoulder Tang.
Here's a closer pic.

I THOUGHT I saw the shoulder marking, but I talked myself out of it since everyone else was sure it was a mimic. All orange shoulders are yellow before they reach maturity. Hybrid my butt.

Orange Shoulder! I agree.
Orange Shoulder seems correct, now that I can see it closer up.

I would seriously reconsider where you get your fish....that LFS obviously doesn't have a clue. Orange shoulders aren't a rare hybrid...they're pretty common. No more rare than any other tang.
