Question

HQI lighting

I know lighting questions can be a little redundent here. But looking thru the archives on lighting I didn't find much DE HQI's.
I'm setting up a 75 gal and am looking at (2) 150w 10k with (2) 30w 03 actinics. I've read that the dbl ended bulbs are supposed to put out more light, that is why I'm looking at the 150's instead of the250's. Is that thinking correct or should I go with the 250's.
Sorry about being long winded.

I am running three 250 watt DE lights on my 400 along with two 400 watt radiums. I really like the DE lights....They do seem to be a little brighter, but it may be an optical illusion. On my 150 at home, I have two 250 watt moguls and 1 400 watt 10k mogul.....Long story short, go with the coloration you like....both of my tanks, have the white crisp look that I like....FWIW, I am not running any actinics on my 400, but I am on the 150.....

I would go with two 250's if you are set on the DE bulbs.....

I absolutely love my 250 w DE lights. I have the AB Aquaspacelight. If you do a search, you can see some pictures that I and others have posted for these light fixtures. I have the 3 x 250w fixture with the 4 x 24w PC's, which really don't do too much when the MH's are on. I am already getting a tan just by sitting in front of my tank

I would think dual 150's would be plenty of light for you on that tank for just about anything you want to keep.

Although, the 250's probably aren't much more $$ than the 150's (at least they weren't when I bought mine) so that's something to consider.

I really like the spread and intensity on my 250 watt HQI Hamiliton Reefstar pendant.

Dan

It depends mostly on how hardcore you are towards SPS.

I have experience with 150W DE 10K Icecap , 250W DE 10K Ushio, and many Single ended 400W such as 10K Ushio and 20K Radiums.

I will first start out by saying, The is no perfect lighting for everything. All wattages/kelvin have strengths and weaknesses. Ballast and reflectors also play a role so not always comparing apples to apples.

I was actually pretty impressed with 150W DE setup and does pack a pretty good punch for the wattage. However, it is only about equal or just slighter brighter than a 175 single ended so if your expecting it to be as high as a 250W single ended it is pretty much an exaggeration.

When comparing to my 400W 20K Radiums it is hard to say which is better as the corals adapt and change to different colors. For example: I picked up about 10 wild caught SPS the day they arrive here from LA importers and for most the 150W DE seemed to hold pretty true to the color ( at least what it looked like by the time it arrives in the US ). After being under the 150W DE in my quarantine 40g breeder for 4-6 weeks, I placed them in the show tank with 400W. Most all of them got brighter more colorful but none really stayed the same color as when I first got them. Those that were light blue all changed to either purple or green under 400W 20K Radiums. For some I preferred what they looked like under the 150W and some I liked the way the Radium colors them up. Which one best represents what it would look like wild caught who really knows because I can only compare to what it looked like by the time it reached MN........

If going to be mostly a community tanks with a wide variety of coral types, it is a fine choice. If you leaning more towards SPS then the 250W double ended or a higher K 400W such as 10K Ushio or Radium ( my personal preference ).

If you haven't seen/read this article, I encourage you too.....

Thanks for the help all. I think I'll go with the 250w DE.

Now does anyone know where I can get a good deal from a reliable dealer? From what I've read the AB units sound "the best" any other suggestions?

Andy wish I had known about you before I bought my skimmer! I'll be giving you a call when it's time to replace it also for a calcium reactor.
