I left the rock out of water for 20-30 minutes on Saturday
Then put it back in the 24g It seems to have suffered no ill effects maybe it's not a sponge? Below are pics from just now

how squishy is it? if it is rubbery and not squishy than it may not be a sponge. if this is the case than see if it peels off. looking at it a bit closer it does not have as many pores as i thought earlier, so it might not be a sponge.

It's a chicken liver sponge. Normally that stuff is what you find as black nasty stinky patches on really super fresh live rock. This bit managed to make it. Normally it doesnt.
in a way you are lucky for that reason.
however it's ugly as sin and you can just peel it off like you do an orange. Be careful not to pull any of the clove polyps off. If you do, just plug them into another rock somewhere and they'll grow.
Or leave it. It doesnt matter. I think the stuff is ugly as snot.

Yeah you'll get goo under your nails.
If I had a buck for every time I had gunk under my nails that took forever to scrub out.... ugh.

hahahhahaha...this made me laugh, not sure why.
Have you thought about just getting the polyps you want OFF this piece, and then just tossin' the whole thing?
i.e. Get the xenia to transfer to higher ground, and pluck the zoa's off that you want. The rest of the rock can go in the trash!!
