Well, nothing good to report. When I got home the female was hanging out around the container. Not really charging or anything but definately hanging out around it. My wife said she'd seen the smaller one in the container doing his seizures. I figure that sounds like what I'm looking for and guess I might try releasing him. I did observe him for about 20 minutes and didn't see any seizures myself. In fact it looked like the female was doing it a little herself. Upon releasing the smaller guy it was back to the same old. She was chasing him all over the tank until he was finally exhausted and hid under the rocks. A bit later he came out for another beating. He was exhausted and I easily netted him up again and put him in the container. I'm guessing he is a she and this isn't going to work. 'It' never danced, just fled like heck and hid. It did try to stand it's ground but quickly realized that was suicide and kept running.

So am I thinking correctly by returning he/she/it for a smaller one?

The dancing thing to me is confusing. I've seen the big female do the convulsions when the sixline was harassing her in her RBTA. That's definately not a mating dance. Is the dance just the universal language for anything it wants to say whether it be get lost, or I'm gonna kick your @$$, or let's be friends, or let's do the wild thing? I feel like I'm learning a foreign language.

LOL tash, not at your situation but at your description!

While you have that one in the net, take it back. Those two are not getting along. If your older one is about 3", find one that's about 1 1/4". I've always found that the bigger the size difference the faster it happens.

BTW, I leave mine in the basket for a few days first.

I probably would give it more time but I'm leaving for a few days. Well I guess the new clown is actually going to have to remain in his container for the rest of the week. It's about a gallon size so he won't be too cramped but I don't have any choice. I suppose when I get back saturday if they haven't kissed and made up by then he's going to get his eviction notice.

Well the fish was in the tank for about 5 days in the container. When I got home and let him out for a second and the female immediately started charging and attacking. I caught the fish and returned him/her to the LFS. The LFS stated that the charging was normal and it may take several months for them to pair. There were no more Percs left at the store (even though I drove 30 minutes to get there because he said he did) and I actually sold the fish to a couple in the store looking for a true perc.
