Question

How often does cleaner shrimp molt?

My cleaner shrimp has molted 3 times in about 5 weeks, is this normal? The first time it happened it sort of freaked me out as the molt looked
like a sickly shrimp.
Also he runs upside down on top of the water ,is that normal? They don't jump do they?

Mine does the upside down thing too.

My cleaner molts about once per month.

Your not dosing iodine are you?

The only thing I have been adding is water. (distilled)
Do have iodine supplement but I am not comfortable with that.
Also was given calcium supplement but haven't needed that yet.

If its molting that often, it just means its eating really well. Nothing to be concerned about, except that its a pretty good indicator that you might be overfeeding your inhabitants...

Just added 2 Zoa and a polyp frag and still trying to figure out how to feed them, but that was less than 2 weeks ago. Shrimpy had molted twice before, and he was the only one being feed before....maybe twice a week.
He won't get too big for my 12 gal will he?

Good. I brought it up because iodine can force him to molt much more often and shorten his life.

If I remember right mine molted allot right when I got him,.. How long have you had yours?

Don't worry about feeding your zoos, they don't need it, if you want them to grow fast run a dirty tank.

I don't accually expect you to run a dirty tank BTW,

Oh, and the shrimp is fine in your 12G,... they really don't move much, they setup a station normally and clean fish that visit.

I have had shrimpy for about 5/6 weeks. He was the smallest one and I was going to have him even if I had to catch him myself.

Oh, so you just got him. Let him settle in a bit then, when mine was small it molted a little more often too so you are probably fine. I have had mine for 2 years and he has really slowed down in his old age. I am accually shocked he is still alive! They normally don't last this long FWIR.

All I am doing this time around is water changes, monitoring levels and scrapping the algae. It is a small tank, I am not rushing things and I plan on enjoying it rather than obsessing. Yeah right.

Thanks!
